Creative Companionship

As culture agents, filmmaker stake several risks to create work they believe in. For artists from historically disadvantaged groups of women, queer creatives, indigenous/ native peoples this often leads to social stigma, creative sabotage and at times risk to one’s life.

The filmmaker accompaniment has been initiated as a companionship process with flexible partnerships provided to filmmakers when in need. It takes advantage of diverse activities at Docskool to offer filmmakers flexible support based on their needs. As an ally to several social campaigns we also work on safety and security of filmmakers in cases of urgent response.

Initiated in 2016 as an addition to the Clinik.Kathmandu labs, the accompaniment works with debutante female and queer filmmakers working on fiction and documentary projects. It offers placements to the Clinik Kathmandu script/ project lab when applicable alongside yearlong companionship for films development and personal support when in need.

The initiative is backed by a group of women artists, feminists from South Asia and elsewhere who are part of the support nexus and active when filmmakers are in need. Filmmakers are also provided residency with Docskool under situation of security risk at home.

With rise in film practice, filmmakers receive more threats than before, as newer forms of silencing artists are being devised globally. This support initiative was devised through filmmaker’s request during the 2021 Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. The accompaniment is oriented to reduce risk to filmmakers, while devising means to offer security at home or elsewhere.

The process has remained active during the Military take over of Myanmar, communal violence in Manipur India in 2023 and during the Bangladesh uprisings.
