The Green Media Fellowship is a six month visual media training and fellowship catered to young environmental defenders. The program provides skills in Documentary film, Photography and Online media in relation to their local application at communities.
The fellowship is offered to 10 young participants active in rural communities as environmental defenders and community leaders. It recognizes the limited access of indigenous, native communities in media as a key obstacle to recognize, to design geography specific interventions. Alongside media trainings, participants also work closely with 15+ community initiatives expanding knowledge on various climate challenges and interventions in practice in Nepal. The fellowship identifies community level organizations working on environment and local governments as key beneficiaries of the program.

Fellowship stages
- Stage1: Foundation training in film and photography (3 months)
- Stage 2: Partner site knowledge exchange and production mentoring (2 months)
- Stage3: Advanced technical workshops (1 month)

Program Pillars
Following pillars have been taken into consideration while designing this program.
1. Localized media use
All media skills provided are intended for application within limited media resources available in Nepal’s remote localities. This includes coverage of community radio’s as technical hubs who currently face sustainability challenges with audience migration towards online mediums.
2. Cross sectoral partnership
The fellowship does not see ecological justice possible by isolated actions alone. Participants work with stakeholders from state, corporate and non profit sectors during the fellowship. Partners joining the program help define the fellowship’s overarching agendas for a given fellowship year.
3. Knowledge Exchange
The Fellowship approaches knowledge exchange as an ongoing process. It forms the basis for all workshops held within the program and partners engagements. Fellows are encouraged to share their media skills with young people at partner sites through informal gatherings.
4. Indigenous Knowledge management, documentation
The program works closely with identity groups of indigenous peoples, initiatives at indigenous territories and with representing leaders of such communities. Documentation and publication of indigenous knowledge as readily available materials is a key character of the program.
5. Evidentiary media production
Informed media access in communities will increase evidentiary media production. These productions will have significant roles to play in the development of new interventions.
Project Objectives
– The project will bridge media skills of 10 young environment defenders to become key actors for media documentation at communities.
– The project provides media advocacy, knowledge management leverage to seed banks, farmers groups and agriculture collectives led by indigenous peoples. The project will assist to prioritise knowledge management and evidentiary documentation of ecological changes.
– The project empowers informed collective ownership of indigenous agro ecological practices amongst young people through ecology observation groups. Self empowered participation will enhance agency of young people towards affirmative actions to secure indigenous people’s way of life.
