Since 2008, Docskool has offered a beginner level workshop on film making. Known simply as ‘Documentary Open School’ in 2008, it also happens to be the workshop that have us our name and purpose. (visit Our Story)

Docskool is glad to keep the tradition alive as we reach out to new groups of people each time its held.

Open to people of all background, the workshop has invited artists in their 80’s to young media students. Many of our part participants now have significant film related portfolio from university professors, to members of the national film board.

The workshop is a one stop to get you started in cinema.

Duration and Flexibility

Currently held as a 3 month part-time course, the Annual Lab covers a wide variety of topics specific to film appreciation and general practice.

The ‘Annual Lab’ will be organised twice a year starting 2024. It will be held as two cycles between May – August and November – February. 

The workshop is held on a part-time basis for 3 months. Due to the nature of participants we have found the workshop usually extends by 15 days to a month. Applicants are requested to keep that into consideration.

 

Upgrade to Certificate in Creative Media

Starting 2024 participants of the  Annual Lab may enroll into the fourth month of the Certificate in Creative Media, further leading into the Diploma in Creative Media. 

The Certificate is a specialisation oriented training, which encourages professional application of media/art skills. This upgrade will enable participants to focus on certain aspects of film, TV production and photography. Participants will also be in a position to undertake independent projects.

Non formal, Alternative Learning

Docskool is a non-formal education provider. This means the school provides participants with the flexibility to relate to and follow projects in their own comfort. The absence of conventional classrooms eliminates the teacher, student hierarchy promoting mentorship based relation. The program is workshop oriented as participants start work on series of short – longer term film/ photography projects from the first day.

Majority of Docskool members are graduates from the Annual Film Lab. It allows access to different form of engagement with Docskool.

Learning Outcome

  • Participants are aware of the camera apparatus. Its operation in film and photography.
  • Participants can compile photo essay’s and shoot short films.
  • Participants are able to edit short films in Adobe Premiere. They acquire basic knowledge on Adobe Photoshop.
  • Participants can write film treatments, have knowledge on a film pitch. They can produce film teasers.

Logistics

Workshop will only provide equipments for the final group project. Participants must have access to a personal DSLR camera and a laptop capable of editing minimum 720p video footage. 

This is a part-time program. Participants will be consulted before deciding on dates of the workshop.  The workshop will be held from Docskool office in Thapathali. Two physical workshops of 2 and 5 days will be conducted from Docskool’s Community Learning Centre in Dhulikhel.

Workshop payments are to be made upfront as a single installment. Additional costs may be applied during group projects.

Application

Application to the Annual Lab requires the following documents

  • An application letter
  • Copy of applicants CV
  • Past work samples (filma/photo) if applicable.
  • One pager of a film concept the applicant wants to produce during the workshop.
