Call: Research Associates

Docskool is a film campaign based in Kathmandu working with cinema in South Asia. We are undertaking a research on Possibilities and Challenges of Independent Cinema in Nepal. We look forward to recruit young media scholars on a paid internship to work on multiple areas of cinema in Nepal with special focus on Independent Cinema. The Research Associate will work closely with a research team to conduct an extensive study on scope of cinemas in Nepal. Areas of focus for the research are Cinema Policy of Nepal 2072, Prevalent production, production oriented commercial and non -commercial cinema practices in Nepal. Available positions – 3 Duration – 3 months starting from 5th February 2016 Eligibility- Fresh media/ film studies graduates or final year students Please send your application to : docskoolnepal@gmail.com by 1st February 2015. QUEER’23

Celebrating Queer Identity and Diversity through the Power of Cinema. The event is scheduled for (Date): 13-14 October 2023, Kathmandu. Veneu : Yala Maya Kendra, Patan dhoka.  Queer’23,” the upcoming festival, a side event of the Kathmandu festival organized by Something Like a Film Festival (SLFF). However, it is currently undergoing a transition to become an independent festival and has set its sights on curate its own festival by 2024. The term “queer” is used as an umbrella term to encompass a wide range of sexual orientations and gender identities that deviate from the societal norms of heterosexuality and gender identity. · Queer’23 is a celebration of rich tapestry of Queer Identity, beyond traditional notion, it recognizes queer identity and celebrates different cultures, communities and individuals. · Exploring Diversity in Cinematic Narratives: Serves as a platform for individuals from diverse backgrounds and films that explore queer narratives to come together and share their stories, experiences and artistic expressions. This initiative recognizes the importance of representation and inclusivity in the film industry, as well as the power of storytelling to foster understanding and empathy. · Perspectives in Contemporary Culture : Embrace contemporary perspectives to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of queer identity in the modern world is its prime charm, so that we can celebrate queer culture and create an inclusive society that respects and values diversity and address the unique challenges faced by queer individuals who belong to multiple marginalized groups. · Queer Spaces: Queer’23 recognizes the importance of safe and inclusive spaces for queer individuals and LGBTQ+ community in the world. It highlight the importance of creating environments where individuals can express themselves freely and authentically explore their own identities. The event will feature dedicated spaces where attendees can connect, share experiences, and build a sense of community. These spaces will serve as a refuge from discrimination and prejudice, allowing individuals to express themselves freely and authentically. · Gender Fluidity and Gender Non-Conformity: Showcasing such films it strives to shed light upon the existing traditional societal norms and stereotypes surrounding gender and sexuality. This festival aims to promote dialogue and encourage critical thinking about these issues which cultivate understanding and acceptance within society and defy traditional expectations. Queer’23 welcomes all film enthusiasts, activists and filmmakers to attend Queer’23 and celebrate vibrant world of cinema , queer identity and contemporary culture, with SLFF. Movements towards more inclusive and accepting world.

Something Like a Film Festival, Kathmandu

Something Like a film festival (SLFF) organized by Documentary Open School is set to host an film festival in Kathmandu. Something like a film festival is a collective anticipated event will showcase a diverse range of films, art exhibitions, and cultural programs, providing a platform for both local and international talents. Something Like a Film Festival Kathmandu cordially invites all film enthusiasts, activists, and filmmakers to join in the celebration of SLFF. The event is scheduled to take place from October 13th to October 15th, 2023, in Kathmandu at the Yala Maya Kendra venue. The festival is divided into several stages, each offering unique set of experiences and opportunities for attendees. Key Programs: 1. Opening Ceremony: Something like a film festival will kick off with a grand opening ceremony on 13 October, 2023. Event will welcome filmmakers, artists, industry professionals, and cinema enthusiasts from around the world. 2. “Labour” – A Short Film by Harun Farocki: One of the highlights of the festival is the screening of “Labour,” a powerful short film by acclaimed German filmmaker Harun Farocki. Known for his thought-provoking documentaries, Farocki explores the theme of labor and its impact on society in this captivating piece. Through his unique storytelling approach, Farocki sheds light on the often overlooked aspects of work and challenges viewers to reflect on their own relationship with labor. 3. Art Exhibition: Atomic Gauguin: In conjunction with the film screenings, an art exhibition titled “Atomic Gauguin” will be held at the festival venue. This exhibition showcases the works of contemporary artists who draw inspiration from Paul Gauguin’s iconic style while exploring themes related to atomic energy and its implications for society. 4. Queer Film Festival: Something like a film festival will be dedicating two days, October 13th and 14th, to a dedicated queer film festival. This program aims to showcase and celebrate LGBTQ+ stories, struggles, and triumphs from around the world. 5. Main event: The main event of Something Like a Film Festival will take place over three days, from October 13th to 15th, 2023. The festival will be held at Yala Maya Kendra, a renowned cultural center in Kathmandu known for its commitment to promoting art and creativity. The program will include features films, short films, documentaries showcasing both existing filmmakers and emerging film makers. 6. Closing/ Award ceremony Festival will come to a close with a special closing ceremony, where “Filmmaker Of The Festival” will be announced and awarded, the filmmaker will be chosen by the audiences. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Something Like a Film festival (SLFF)- Kathmandu, invites undergraduate/ +2 level students to apply for volunteer opportunity. Something Like a Film festial organised by Documentary Open School is nomadic film and interdisciplinary media festival with a focous on documentaries and interdisciplinary visual media. The festival will be between 13-15 October 2023. Festival provides unique opportunity for students to watch and facilitate disussion of over 40 curated projects from different parts of the world.
