The Creative Media (Specialisation) Higher Diploma is a great way to explore the enormously interesting world of visual media. This  skill oriented, monetisable course is open to everyone interested in film and creative media. It is open for everyone to apply and work towards a career right away.

Following Docskool’s 16 years as an open education modeled institute, this program has been has been designed for creative individuals looking for alternative ways to explore learning. It caters to creative thinkers who may be struggling in conventional schooling system.

The Creative Media Production course begins with a 12 month Foundation Diploma that explores the foundations of visual storytelling, audience building, creative interpretation through design, photography, film and online broadcasting. Participants may exit the course after one year with Diploma in creative Media Skills or continue towards a specialization 2 year Higher Diploma. Specialisation offered is Documentary Film, Photography, Broadcast Media (Sound/ TV), Creative industry management.

Minimum age requirement for this course is 18 years. Start the course right after +2 or with limited professional exposure as an advanced placement student.

Upgrade to Job Oriented Specialisation Diploma

This program enables participants to upgrade for the 24 month Higher Diploma of Creative Media. The higher Diploma is a job oriented specialization program. Based on interest participants can select one of four disciplines (film, documentary film/photography, broadcast media and creative industry management).

Alongside a highly valuable Diploma, acceptable at professional media, NGO’s alike, the higher diploma includes 3 months of mandatory Traineeship. Traineeship provides participants the unique opportunity to work outside Kathmandu with local communities, on wide ranging topics from nature conservation, indigenous identity, community empowerment among others. As a country undergoing rapid growth, transformative change is happening at communities across Nepal, the diploma provides you with opportunity to explore these change first hand and to build experience much valued by future employers. 

We encourage participants undertake projects in all modality so there is no barrier to what you can or cannot create. All work produced can be used as part of your professional portfolio.  

Non formal, Alternative Education

Docskool is a non-formal education provider. This means the school provides participants with the flexibility to relate to and follow projects in their own comfort. The absence of conventional classrooms eliminates the teacher, student hierarchy promoting mentorship based relation. The program is project oriented as participants start work on final and group projects from the first day.

The course is designed as compatible with National Vocational Qualification Level 4(Certificate); Level 5 (Diploma) of the National education framework of Nepal. Diploma is provided for learning hours attended.

Learning Outcome

  • Strong understanding of the media industry, online broadcast operation, film production and technicalities involved.
  • Knowledge to deconstruct film and photography, to develop personal perspectives.
  • Ability to lead and execute independent media projects.
  • Comfortable skills to undertake projects from incubation to execution.
  • Knowledge on application of media skills at community level with media agencies and NGO’s.
  • Students may acquire a transcript with details of learning hours to further apply to universities.

Logistics

This is a full-time program. The program will be conducted in Kathmandu, followed by physical workshops held at Docskool’s Community Media hub in Dhulikhel. Sessions will be conducted 4 times a week. 80% attendance is mandatory.

Docskool Dhulikhkel provides lodging for free to all Diploma students. Food prices are on cost share basis and usually are under 75 Rs per meal.

Job Prospect

This is a foundation qualification in Creative Media. We encourage participants to look at this as an opportunity to explore visual media and to assess its practice independently.

Graduates will possess skills required to perform as an assistant editor, assistant cinematographer, radio/ television technician, floor manager for TV stations, documentary filmmaker, script writer among others.

The course should not be approached as an alternative to conventional university education.

You seek non-academic opportunities to explore film, photography, and other visual arts, catering to individuals or pre-university students preparing for their higher education journey.

Facilities are as per requirement. Docskool’s library has a large collection of books, film archive, a theater, editing setups and sound/

camera equipments.

All students must have a PC and Camera/ Sound recorder if offered a seat.

Students explore and learn from personal and prevailing work to develop skills to incubate, implement and exhibit media projects. The

diploma’s orientation to Documentary is self-reflective, it encourages participants to form analysis of the society, while developing
personal perceptions of their environment.

This diploma is assessed purely on the basis of student projects with fair emphasis on communication skills, ability to meet project
requirement and analysis of personal and peer work. Students do not appear for exams.

Upon graduation students can expect to work as documentary filmmakers, photographers, assistant editors, assistant cinematographers, Sound designer/ recordist, colour colorist, broadcast journalist among others.

This program provides a strong foundation in visual arts, film foundation, photography foundation, editing (software skills), cinematography, graphic communication (software skills), animation foundation, media production, and various creative disciplines, equipping students with essential skills for the creative industries.

Faculty

Abhimanyu Dixit

Abhimanyu Dixit is a cultural worker, filmmaker/ producer, director working with fiction and non fiction films. As a producer he has visited Rotterdam Labs(IFFR) , Film Bazaar (india) among others. He is an alumni of Docskool (2010). He has taught cinema at Kathmandu University and is a film critic with The Kathmandu Post.

Amit Shrestha

Amit Shrestha is a sound producer, designer and recordist. He has been awarded the national award for sound designing by Film Development board of Nepal. He is an alumni of Lasalle College of Arts Singapore where he studied Sound Production.  

Aun Deo Joshi

Arun Joshi has been a TV broadcaster since early days of private TV in Nepal. He has over 25 years of experience working with several TV stations as a producer, broadcaster, director. He is a founding alumni of Docskool in 2008, and has since worked with documentaries and fiction projects. He has served as an advisor to the Film Development Board of Nepal, and freelances as a script analyst. 

Deepraja Udas

Deepraja Udash is an editor whose focus is on documentary and news editing. He worked for Kantipur TV as the chief news editor for 15 years until 2021. His clientele in Nepal have included BBC Media Action, BBC News and several development partners whom he has worked with as a creative lead and local editor.

Jyotsna Maskay

Jyotsna Maskay is a development and gender expert working with community based activists, academics and development organisations in different capacity. She has designed and led the social impact initiatives of Docskool since 2016 which include ‘women in cinema companionship’ and ‘filmmaker at risk support’.  

Kshitiz Adhiraj

Kshitiz Adhiraj is a filmmaker, photographer, director/ producer and founding director of Docskool. He is an alumni of  Puttnam School of Film (Lasalle College of Arts) and Institute of Photography (Falmouth University). As a cultural worker he has worked with several festivals, film labs as a consultant and partner.  He has curated photo projects, edited and written on film and photography.

Mahesh Shrestha

Mahesh Shrestha is a visual artist, filmmaker and theater worker since 2005. In 2022 he led the ‘Camera Sika’ initiative training large number of film educators across Nepal and was instrumental in the formal of children film program at Film Development Board. Mahesh Shrestha is a 2008 alumni of Docskool.

Pashupati Rai

Pashupati Rai is one of most known female actors working in Nepali language films. She is an active theater artist appearing in significant plays throughout the year. She also directs and writes plays that mostly deal with her identity as an indigenous Rai woman. Pashupati Rai is an alumni of Gurukul School of theater.

Sashul Shrestha

Sashul Shrestha is an animator, editor and visual artist. He has worked with Docskool since 2010 as the technical supervisor to all productions and trainings where he teaches post production, editing. As an animator he has worked for leading animation studios and trained several people. He is an alumni of Docskool from 2010.
